I'm a Regis University CHOICE BSN nursing graduate class of December 2021. I have a passion for Cardiology and have been employed in the field for more than 10 years. I currently work as a Cardiac Technologist conducting stress testing with Denver Health. I have the best job. Denver Health is an anchor institution in our community. I take great pride in what I do and plan pursue a career as a nurse leader in Cardiology.

Serving the Denver Community

I'm a native Coloradan, born and raised in the high desert of Southern Colorado. Ranch and farm life taught me to be tough yet kind. I get my work ethic and go-getter spirit from that upbringing. Now I call Denver my home. I work at Denver Health while going to school at Regis University. I serve my community with pride. Colorado has grown, but I'm happy we have stuck to our core principals where we help out our neighbors and continue to respect the land.

I firmly believe the practitioner never stops learning. Medicine changes every day. It is our duty to stay informed of evidence-based practice and current research.

I have been fortunate to participate in research projects within the hospital. In 2017 I had the top research abstract for the professional improvement poster gallery. I conducted research by auditing ECG lead placement across all patients in a given time-frame to assess for accuracy. Methods used and purpose was like research in other hospitals to reduce missing anterior STEMI's. Overall, this research showed there was a need for education.

Understanding my beliefs and biases has been the foundation of understanding the world around me. As a healthcare provider I care for diverse demographics of patients. I am constantly striving to expand my mind to the things I may not understand. I believe true empathy comes from understanding life from someone else's perspective.

Part of treating the whole person is having a holistic approach to care. I believe treating mind, body, and soul starts with a foundation within myself. I enjoy playing the flute and try to make time for it even through school. My education background is in science and psychology. This foundation sets me up to be the best health care provider and leader I can be.

I work well under stress; but that is only because I have the experience to take immediate action when time is of the highest importance.

I was watching telemetry and had a patient being monitored on Tikosyn. They converted Torsades, a lethal dysrhythmia, and I could not get ahold of or find anyone to check the patient. I ran to the patient's room with the crash cart while the other tele tech initiated the CODE Blue. The patient was unresponsive, so I proceeded to apply and use the AED. The best part of the story is the patient had a full recovery!

Before starting nursing school, I was chair of the Med/Tele Unit Based Council and representative at the Professional Practice Council at Sky Ridge Medical Center. I have participated in evidence-based councils and took on championship roles in every hospital I have worked. Nurses are the backbone of the hospital. When people come together, great ideas are born. These ideas improve patient quality and safety standards. They increase value.

Currently, I am Director of Communications for the Colorado Student Nurses Association. I maintain the COSNA website and ensure timely communication through that and our social media platforms.

I am a confident Excel user. I have created several HIPAA compliant assignment sheets for various units in HCA. One sheet runs a password protected query from Teletracking and automatically fills in the assignment sheet on the intranet. The charge nurse only needs to print it after the nurses update relevant patient information (line, Foley, DNR, diagnosis). I have also created spreadsheets that are used at the HCA continental division level for fiscal management of staffing resources to patient ratios. I created a sentence generator for QxMD specific cardiac charting for Denver Health.

I stay up-to-date on hospital training. I also follow legislative changes that affect nursing and healthcare in Colorado. I would like to participate in visit-the-capitol days for nursing. I participated in a couple days for behavioral health and clinical counseling. They were insightful. I recently wrote a paper on Undocumented Immigrants needing renal hemodialysis. I am interested to learn more.

I am called to action has a health care provider. My calling does not stop in the hospital. I am driven to contribute to the the wellbeing of others in my community, state, and our nation. I have been involved in volunteer service and community outreach on a small scale, but I am interested in becoming more involved. I have experience actively participating in the Denver Heart Walk and other local events doing vital signs and fundraisers.

I will revisit one of my long-term goals. After nursing school, I plan pursuing graduate school to become a nurse leader. I studied two years on scholarship for music. I have my Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I have my Master of Science in Clinical Counseling. There is a tag on PsyD program I would like to pursue, but graduate nursing is still most important to me. I use clinicalkey.com and up-to-date as resources for peer-review articles and medical books on a weekly basis. I am always striving to expand my mind.
